The IVF Process Explained Step-by-Step: From First Visit to Embryo Transfer

Starting IVF can feel overwhelming — especially when you're unsure what the journey involves. Understanding each step in the IVF process can help you feel more in control and prepare mentally, physically, and financially.

At Ovy Health, we’re here to walk with you at every stage. Here’s a clear, step-by-step breakdown of what typically happens during IVF treatment:

1. Initial Consultation & Fertility Testing

Your journey begins with a consultation with a fertility specialist. You and your partner (if applicable) will discuss medical history and undergo basic tests:

  • Blood tests (AMH, FSH, LH, estradiol)
  • Semen analysis
  • Ultrasound to check ovarian reserve and uterine health

At this stage, Ovy Health can help you prepare your test results through home kits or coordinate with our partner clinics.

2. Ovarian Stimulation

You’ll begin hormone injections (typically for 8–14 days) to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. You’ll visit the clinic for regular monitoring via blood tests and ultrasound to track follicle growth.

Ovy’s app lets you log symptoms, medication times, and get reminders so you stay on track.

3. Trigger Shot & Egg Retrieval

Once your follicles reach the right size, you’ll receive a “trigger shot” (hCG or Lupron) to prepare your body for egg retrieval. About 36 hours later, your eggs will be collected through a minor outpatient procedure under sedation.

This step is quick — usually 15–30 minutes — but requires rest afterward.

4. Fertilization & Embryo Development

Your eggs are combined with sperm (partner’s or donor’s) in the lab. This can be done through conventional IVF or ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). The fertilized eggs (embryos) are monitored for 3–5 days.

At this stage, you may choose PGT-A (genetic testing) to identify the healthiest embryos.

5. Embryo Transfer

One or two healthy embryos are selected and transferred into your uterus in a simple, painless procedure. You’ll then wait 9–14 days for a pregnancy test to confirm success — known as the “two-week wait.”

6. Aftercare & What’s Next

Whether you achieve pregnancy or plan to freeze embryos, your clinic will support you through follow-up care. Ovy’s virtual nurse and symptom tracker can help guide you through this emotionally intense time.
